There are few things as gratifying as being able to look back on your work and see how far you’ve come. For graffiti artists, this is doubly true – their canvases are usually not intended to be permanent, and so the act of photographing their work before it’s painted over or otherwise destroyed is vital to preserving their legacy. But what happens when you want to take your graffiti to the next level, and turn it into a font?
Enter Drak, a new graffiti font from Germany-based typographer Cornel Windlin. Drak is available as a free download from his website, and comes in two weights, Regular and Bold. The font’s characters are based on Windlin’s own graffiti style, which he’s been honing for the past 20 years.
Windlin was kind enough to answer a few questions about Drak, his work, and the graffiti scene in Germany.
What was the motivation behind creating Drak?
I’ve been interested in creating a graffiti font for many years, but it wasn’t until recently that I had the time to actually sit down and design one. I wanted to create a font that would be easy to use for anyone, whether they’re a graffiti artist or a graphic designer.
What’s the story behind your graffiti alias, Drak?
My graffiti alias is actually quite boring – it’s just my initials (C.W.) spelled backwards. I started writing graffiti in the early 1990s, and at that time, most graffiti writers in Germany were using aliases that were English words or phrases. I wanted to have a German alias, to set myself apart from the rest.
What’s the graffiti scene like in Germany?
The graffiti scene in Germany is very diverse. In the big cities, you have a lot of writers from all different backgrounds and styles. In the smaller cities, it’s usually just a few writers who know each other.
Do you have any advice for aspiring graffiti artists?
The best advice I can give is to just keep practicing. The more you paint, the better you’ll become.
